Democrats hold rallies in cities across the country to oppose Obamacare repeal

Democrats are turning to grassroots activism to save Obamacare. And on Sunday they held a “day of action” by organizing rallies in dozens of cities across the country to build momentum against the Republican effort to repeal Obamacare.

At each rally across the country, the speakers talked about the people would lose who would lose health care or have their finances devastated if Republicans are successful at repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Beyond the sending an emphatic message about the need to save Obamacare the rallies are also a clear step toward the grassroots and activist side of the party for the party as Democrats aim to reclaim the excitement that Bernie Sanders captured during his bid for the nomination.

Thousands of people braved freezing temperatures to hear Senator Bernie Sanders in Michigan. Sanders has emerged as one of the Democratic party’s strongest voices – particularly in the fight to save Obamacare. “This is the wealthiest country in the history of the world. It is time we got our national priorities right,” Sanders said.

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer was also at the rally. People at the rally held signs that said, “Save our Health Care.”

According to NPR who covered the event:

It’s no accident that Sanders and Schumer chose to hold their event in Warren. Surrounding Macomb County tells the story of Democrats’ 2016 woes. It went narrowly for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, but last year Donald Trump carried Macomb County by more than 10 points over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Trump’s raw vote total in the largely white, working-class county—about 48,000 votes—was more than four times his margin of victory in the once-reliably Democratic state.

Both Sanders and Schumer believe Democrats can recapture economy-focused working class voters, and holding a rally in Macomb County to defend a healthcare program is one way to show voters who supported Trump that the Democratic Party is attentive to their concerns.

And in Boston more than 6,000 people braved bellow freezing temperatures to join Elizabeth Warren at a rally. Warren told the crowd, “We knew these fights were coming, and now the first one is here. We will fight them every step of the way.”

Here are some photos from the rallies around the country on Sunday:
