Arkansas Supreme Court Blocks Two Executions Scheduled For Monday Night

Another legal setback for the state of Arkansas as they attempt to execute 8 people in 11 days.

The Arkansas Supreme Court on Monday granted a last-minute stay of execution for two Arkansas inmates who were scheduled for execution on Monday night, the AP reported. The Court decided on a 4-3 basis to block the executions while the United States Supreme Court takes up a different case next week which consumers access to mental health experts for defendants.

The Attorney General of Arkansas says that she will appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The ruling Monday is the latest in a series of legal setbacks for the state of Arkansas which hastily scheduled 8 executions in 11 days because one of the drugs they use to kill people is set to expire at the end of April.

The manufacturers of the drugs object to states using their drugs in executions, and the states including Arkansas have indicated that they don’t have a way of obtaining more of the sedative midazolam.
