President Obama will give his farewell address from his hometown of Chicago next week. The address is likely his last chance to share a vision for the country and defend his legacy before Donald Trump takes office on January 20.

Barack Obama’s farewell address set for Chicago

Obama’s farewell address is scheduled for the evening of Jan. 10 at McCormick Place – a convention center overlooking Lake Michigan. And in an email to supporters, President Obama said the speech was “a chance to say thank you for this amazing journey, to celebrate the ways you’ve changed this country for the better these past eight years, and to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here.”

The president has been in Hawaii with his family on vacation for the past two weeks but that has not prevented his administration from moving forward with many bold initiatives in its final days. On Thursday, President Obama announced sanctions against Russia for its attempts to disrupt the November election. And a week earlier, the Obama Administration allowed the United Nations Security Council to adopt a resolution that condemned Israeli settlement construction. Obama has also used his final days in office to protect large sections of land and water from oil and gas drilling.

And since Donald Trump won the November election, President Obama’s many accomplishments look to be at risk – particularly Obamacare formally known as the Affordable Care Act.

President Obama is also scheduled to travel to Capitol Hill to on Wednesday to meeting Democratic members of Congress to strategize on how to protect Obamacare and the rest of his legacy under a Trump administration.

Barack Obama emails supporters about farewell address

President Obama’s email continued by saying, “In 1796, as George Washington set the precedent for a peaceful, democratic transfer of power, he also set a precedent by penning a farewell address to the American people. And over the 220 years since, many American presidents have followed his lead.”

“Since 2009, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges, and come through them stronger,’’ he wrote. “That’s because we have never let go of a belief that has guided us ever since our founding — our conviction that, together, we can change this country for the better.”

“So I hope you’ll join me one last time. Because, for me, it’s always been about you.”
