California emerging as leading opposition to Donald Trump

The decision by California lawmakers to hire Eric Holder is the latest sign of the coming ideological battle that is expected to play out over the next four years between California’s predominantly Democratic state and Washington D.C. which is now controlled by Republicans. Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump by more than 4 million votes in California so the message to California lawmakers is clear – stand up to Trump.

The Democratic leader in the Senate Kevin de Leon said in an interview, “Having the former attorney general of the United States brings us a lot of firepower in order to prepare to safeguard the values of the people of California. This means we are very, very serious.”

Leader de León said that he expects California to challenge Washington D.C. on a series of issues including the environment, immigration and criminal justice. He continued by saying that California Democrats have decided to pick Eric Holder as they watched Mr. Trump assemble his cabinet.

de Leon continued, “It was very clear that it wasn’t just campaign rhetoric. He was surrounding himself with people who are a very clear and present danger to the economic prosperity of California.”

In California the Democratic Party now controls two-thirds of both the Assembly and the Senate and every statewide elected office.
