One day after receiving the official intelligence report that confirmed Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help him win, Donald Trump called for the U.S. to have a better relationship with Russia.

And Trump didn’t stop at just calling for better relations with Russia, in a series of tweets Trump called anyone who doesn’t agree with him about relations with Russia “stupid.”

Don’t blame Russia, Blame the Democrats

Donald Trump on Saturday continued his efforts to minimize Russia’s influence in the 2016 presidential election and tried to claim that Democrats were raising the issue of election hacking because they are “embarrassed” by the loss in November. Trump’s assertion is essentially that rather than hold Russia accountable for this unprecedented breach of American sovereignty that Democrats are at fault for not “gross negligence.”

Trump has continued to refuse to blame Russia any election interference despite receiving overwhelming evidence from intelligence officials confirming Russian interference. U.S. intelligence agencies including the CIA and FBI have said they have high confidence (the highest level they attribute to something) that Russia’s goal was to help Trump win the election while hurting Clinton’s chances.

Trump’s big lie about the intelligence report

Since receiving the classified intelligence report confirming the Russian intervention in the election to help him win, Trump has continued to falsely assert that the report confirms that the Russian hack had no impact on the election results. However, the report clearly said it did not look into whether the election hacking had any impact on the election results. That didn’t stop Trump from falsely tweeting that the report said there was no evidence that the hack affected the results.

Trump’s continued insistence to ignore the intelligence community’s findings and to instead call for closer ties to the Russian government raises major questions about what Trump’s motivations are for a better relationship with Russia.
