President Obama awards Joe Biden Medal of Freedom in emotional ceremony

In a surprise ceremony President Barack Obama on Thursday awarded Vice President Joe Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

The event moved Biden to tears. President Obama called Biden “the best vice president America has ever had” and “a lion of American history.” And at the end of his remarks, President Obama surprised everyone by announcing that he was honoring Joe Biden with the medal of freedom with distinction.

Biden who was already tearing up began crying when the award was announced.

“I had no inkling,” Biden said, taking the podium after Obama awarded him the medal.

President Obama honored Joe Biden for his lifetime of public service, including his decades in the Senate, eight years as vice president. The president praise Biden for everything from championing the Violence Against Women Act, his record of diplomacy, the  “cancer moonshot” he is leading and his campaign to combat sexual assault on college campuses.

“That’s a pretty remarkable legacy, an amazing career in public service. It is, as Joe once said, a big deal,” Obama said, pausing between the “big” and the “deal.”
