WATCH: Robert Reich’s Video ‘This Is How Tyranny Begins’
Robert Reich on Friday posted a video entitled, “This is how tyranny starts.” Reich breaks down how “historically, tyrants have tried to control the press using four techniques.”
#1. Berate The Media
Reich reminds us about all of Trump’s disturbing attacks on the press, calling them “liars” and “disgusting.”
#2. Limit Media Access
Trump has blocked the media from traveling with him and prevented them from knowing who he is meeting with, Reich notes. For example, Trump’s phone call with Vladimir Putin was first reported in Russian media.
#3. Threaten the Media
Donald Trump threatened to sue the New York Times for libel because of an article they ran about two women who accused Trump of sexual assault. Trump also has said he plans to open up libel laws.
#4. Bypass the Media
Trump’s use of Twitter and other forms of bypassing the media allows him to lie to the public directly without a check by news organizations.
