Jeff Sessions Recuses Himself From Trump-Russia Investigation

Attorney General Sessions announced Thursday that he is recusing himself from overseeing the investigation into the Trump-Russia scandal.

Sessions said during the press conference Thursday afternoon that he asked his staff for a “candid and honest” opinion about whether he should recuse himself. “My staff recommended recusal,” Sessions continued. “They said since I had involvement with the campaign I should not be involved in any campaign investigation. I have studied the rules and considered their comments. I believe those recommendations are right and just. Therefore I have recused myself in the matters that deal with the Trump campaign.”

Sessions met twice during the campaign with the Russian ambassador and later lied about those meetings during his Senate his confirmation hearing.

After details emerged about that Sessions had in fact met with the Russian ambassador, top Democrats including Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer called for Sessions to resign. Several Republicans had called for Sessions to recuse himself.
