Pelosi Statement on Circuit Court Ruling for LGBT Equality

Washington, D.C. — Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled, 8-3, that the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects employees from workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation:

“Freedom from discrimination is a fundamental civil right that belongs to every American. The 7th Circuit decision is a resounding victory for LGBT Americans and the right of every person to dignity and opportunity in the workplace.

“No one should suffer discrimination because of who they are or who they love — not in the workplace, not in any place. As we celebrate the Circuit Court ruling, we know we must also pass the Equality Act, to finally end discrimination in employment, education, housing, credit, jury service, and public accommodation for LGBT people.

“There should be no doubt about the civil rights of LGBT men, women and children in our country. While Republicans have worked to roll back the rights of LGBT Americans, and the Trump Administration has abandoned transgender students, Democrats will continue to demand full equality for LGBT families.”
