FBI Obtained FISA Warrant To Monitor Communications Of Trump Adviser Carter Page

UPDATED:

MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Tuesday tweeted that according to a source Cater Page was not the only one who is the subject of a FISA warrant suggesting there is more trouble to come for Trump and team. Reid said “Source: Carter Page isn’t the only Trump campaign ally who was the subject of a FISA warrant. A second target was recorded also. Tick tock..”

And Congressman Ted Lieu said the news of a FISA warrant on Carter Page means it’s time to appoint a special prosecutor now. “Warrant on Carter Page shows we no longer have smoke. We have extreme heat. Acting Atty General must appoint a Special Prosecutor NOW,” Lieu said.

Trump adviser Carter Page has been under FBI surveillance since July when a FISA Court approved the FBI’s warrant request.

There is a new break in the Trump-Russia scandal. A report out Tuesday says that the FBI obtained a FISA warrant over the summer to monitor the communications of Trump adviser Carter Page.

According to the Washington Post, the FISA warrant was “part of an investigation into possible links between Russia and the campaign, law enforcement and other U.S. officials said.”

The news of the FISA warrant on Carter Page is important because as the Washington Post notes, there is a very high bar required to obtain a FISA warrant. The Washington Post report notes, “The FBI and the Justice Department obtained the warrant targeting Carter Page’s communications after convincing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judge that there was probable cause to believe Page was acting as an agent of a foreign power, in this case Russia, according to the officials.”

Donald Trump identified Carter Page as on of his senior foreign policy advisers during the campaign.

FBI Director James Comey confirmed last month that the FBI is currently investigating collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The Washington Post report noted, “The government’s application for the surveillance order targeting Page included a lengthy declaration that laid out investigators’ basis for believing that Page was an agent of the Russian government and knowingly engaged in clandestine intelligence activities on behalf of Moscow, officials said.”

“The application also showed that the FBI and the Justice Department’s national security division have been seeking since July to determine how broad a network of accomplices Russia enlisted in attempting to influence the 2016 presidential election, the officials said,” the Washington Post report said.

The initial 90-day FISA warrant has been renewed more than once according to the Washington Post.
