Planned Parenthood President Will Join Bernie Sanders and Tom Perez On Dem Unity Tour
Cecile Richards, the President of Planned Parenthood, will join Senator Bernie Sanders and DNC Chair Tom Perez on their national tour later this month, according to The Hill.
She will join Sanders and Perez in Las Vegas on April 22 which is the final stop in the DNC unity tour. The news that the Planned Parenthood President will join Sanders and Perez makes clear that Democrats are trying to activate the party after Republicans and Donald Trump’s recent attack on Planned Parenthood.
Perez has made significant efforts to reach out to the progressive wing of the party after a bruising primary and a hard-fought race for DNC Chair. In his first move as DNC Chair Perez named his rival Keith Ellison as Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee.
Donald Trump on Thursday signed a resolution that gives states the ability to withhold federal family planning funds from Planned Parenthood and other health clinics that offer abortion services. The new resolution overturns an Obama-era rule that was put in place to prevent states from defunding Planned Parenthood and other healthcare providers for any reason other than the provider’s lack of “ability to deliver services to program beneficiaries in an effective manner.”
