Senate Republicans Exempt Themselves From Their Crummy Health Care Bill

Republicans are trying to get rid of your Obamacare but want to keep it for themselves.

Senate Republicans just unveiled the new version of their health care plan. The bill is being criticized because it weakens important Obamacare protections, like those for people with pre-existing conditions.

But, as Vox points out, Republicans made sure to exempt themselves from those changes.

“This exemption could have the effect of ensuring that members of Congress have coverage for a wider array of benefits than other Americans who purchase their own coverage,” Vox reports.

The exemption ensures that members of Congress have access to Obamacare’s essential benefits. The essential benefits outlined in Obamacare ensure that insurance companies can’t sell crummy plans that don’t cover things like cancer care or that include lifetime spending caps.

The Vox report notes that under the new Republican plan, “Insurers can offer plans without these benefits — unless they’re selling coverage to members of Congress and their staff, who are required to buy coverage on the health law marketplaces. The exemption says this part of the law still applies to any plans sold to Congress.”
