Major Portions Of Obamacare Repeal Bill Violate Senate Rules

Republicans just hit another setback in their attempt to repeal Obamacare.

According to the Senate Parliamentarian, major provisions of the Republican bill violate budget reconciliation rules and would require a 60 vote majority to be passed.

There are two provisions in question. The first one is the language that would allow insurance companies to charge older people five times what they charge younger people. The second provision the parliamentarian rejected is a proposal that would allow small businesses to establish what is called “association health plans” that could be sold across state lines.

The news from the Parliamentarian follows the announcement last week that portions of the bill relating to the defunding of Planned Parenthood and abortion funding restrictions also would not be able to be passed under budget reconciliation.

Republicans are attempting to use the budget reconciliation process in order to avoid the 60 vote threshold required in the Senate.
