Bipartisan Group Of Senators Introduce Bill To Protect Mueller

Congress continues to break with Donald Trump.

Bipartisan support to protect special counsel Robert Mueller from being fired by Donald Trump is growing rapidly.

On Thursday, Republican Senator Thom Tillis and Democrat Chris Coons introduced a bill that would prevent the President from firing any Special Counsel.

The bill would apply retroactively to Mueller’s appointment in May.

The plan would allow Mueller and any other Special Counsel to challenge their firing with a three-judge panel within 14 days. And if the is no “good cause” the special counsel would be reinstated.

The bill also specifically takes away Donald Trump’s ability fire Mueller directly, if the law is passed, only an attorney general confirmed by the Senate would have the power to remove the special counsel. In Mueller’s case that would be the deputy attorney general.

In a statement, Tillis said, “The President would maintain the power to remove the special counsel, but we would just want to make sure that it had merit and have that back-end judicial process.”

“And if there is a termination, we just want to make sure, through judicial review, that it was warranted,” he added.

At the same time, Senators Cory Booker and Lindsey Graham are also working on their own legislation that would limit Donald Trump’s ability to fire Mueller.
