Special Counsel Mueller Has Impaneled A Grand Jury In Russia Case

BREAKING

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury in Washington DC as part of his investigation into the Trump-Russia scandal.

The news was first reported by The Wall Street Journal Thursday afternoon.

According to the Journal, the grand jury, which is based in Washington DC, is “a sign that his inquiry is growing in intensity and entering a new phase, according to people familiar with the matter.”

The news of a grand jury in the case is a sign that Speical Counsel Mueller’s investigation has been gaining steam and is further along than previously thought.

“Before Mr. Mueller was tapped in May to be special counsel, federal prosecutors had been using at least one other grand jury, located in Alexandria, Va., to assist in their criminal investigation of Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser. That probe, which has been taken over by Mr. Mueller’s team, focuses on Mr. Flynn’s work in the private sector on behalf of foreign interests,” The Wall Street Journal notes.

The revelation of a new grand jury indicates that Mueller believes he will need to start subpoenaing documents and witnesses.

Investigation grows beyond Flynn

The Wall Street Journal also quoted a law professor saying, “If there was already a grand jury in Alexandria looking at Flynn, there would be no need to reinvent the wheel for the same guy. This suggests that the investigation is bigger and wider than Flynn, perhaps substantially so.”
