New Poll Finds Good News For Democrats Going Into 2018 Elections

If the elections were held today, Democrats would clean up.

A new poll released Thursday finds that Democrats are already in good shape heading into the 2018 elections.

According to the CNN poll, Democrats lead Republicans by 11 points in the “generic ballot.” The poll found that if the elections were held today, Democrats would receive 51 percent of the vote while Republicans would get 40 percent.

And among registered Democrats lead by a similar 51 percent to 42 percent for Republicans.

According to Vox, the poll results suggest that Democrats could pick up 34 Republican seats, far exceeding the 24 seats needed to recapture the majority in the House.

Of course, the generic ballot isn’t a perfect model for election results. It doesn’t properly account for gerrymandering. None the less, the poll indicates that Democrats have a significant chance of recapturing the House in 2018.

About the poll: The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS by telephone August 3 through 6 among a random national sample of 1,018 adults. The margin of sampling error for results among the full sample is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points, it is larger for subgroups.
