Puerto Rico Is Going To Recount Hurricane Deaths

There is mounting evidence that the death toll is significantly higher than official numbers suggest.

Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rosselló has ordered a recount of every death on the island caused by Hurricane Maria.

The recount announcement comes as evidence continues to mount that the official death toll massively underestimates the true number.

The official death count in Puerto Rico from the storm is at 64.

However, The New York Times conducted an independent analysis that concluded the number is closer to 1,052.

Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism also estimated that 1,065 more people than usual had died in September and October of 2017 than in the same period in 2016 and 2015.

The New York Times points out that “there was a sharp spike — by 50 percent — in the number of recorded deaths from sepsis, a complication of severe infection that can be tied to delayed medical care or poor living conditions.”
