Tom Perez is chosen as the new DNC Chair

After two rounds of voting former Labor Secretary Tom Perez was voted in as the new chair of the Democratic Party. Perez won 235 votes, Keith Ellison received 200 votes.

Congressman Keith Ellison has been named deputy chair of the Democratic Party.

The vote caps a contentious battle within the Democratic Party between the establishment wing of the party and the progressive faction that is generally aligned with Bernie Sanders.

The new DNC Chair has a lot of work ahead of him to rebuild the Democratic Party infrastructure after and stinging defeat in 2016 both nationally and in locally.

He will also sever as the voice of the party in opposition to Donald Trump and the Republicans while the party rebuilds.

Chair Tom Perez will also need to work to heal the divide within the Democratic Party between the establishment wing which he represents and progressive wing that is aligned with Bernie Sanders.

Pete Buttigieg dropped out of the race just prior to the vote however he did not endorse any other candidate.
