Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey to protect himself from the Russia investigation most Americans believe according to a new poll.

According to the new ABC News/Washington Post poll, 61 percent of Americans believe Donald Trump fired James Comey to protect himself while just 27 percent believe Trump fired the FBI Director for the good of the country.

And possibly more troubling for Donald Trump and the country, the vast majority of Americans don’t trust Donald Trump on the Russia issue.

The poll found that 72 percent of Americans either don’t trust Donald Trump or have little trust in him on the issue of Russia. In fact, more Americans trust former FBI Director James Comey than trust the President of the United States on the issue. Though neither are particularly trustworthy according to the poll results.

The poll results come just one day before former FBI Director James Comey is set to testify before the Senate about his firing by Donald Trump as well as instances where Trump pressured him to drop the FBI’s investigation into his campaign and Flynn.

About the poll: The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cellular telephone June 2-4, 2017, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 527 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 5.0 points, including the design effect. Partisan divisions are 33-23-38 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents.
