McConnell Delays August Recess To Continue Obamacare Repeal Effort

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Tuesday that the Senate will delay the start of the August recess until the third week of the month so that they could continue their work on the health care legislation.

“In order to provide more time to complete action on important legislative items and process nominees that have been stalled by a lack of cooperation from our friends across the aisle, the Senate will delay the start of the August recess until the third week of August,” McConnell said in a statement.

“Once the Senate completes its work on health care reform, we will turn to other important issues including the National Defense Authorization Act and the backlog of critical nominations that have been mindlessly stalled by Democrats,” McConnell continued.

An important consequence of the delayed recess is that lawmakers will not face their constituents at home meaning the extreme push back that Republicans are facing over the bill is not going to be confronting Senators.

The announcement comes as Republicans continued to struggle to revive their Obamacare repeal bill which went off the rails after the CBO release analysis finding that the GOP bill would cause 22 million to lose insurance.

The health care stall has created a significant backlog of work for the Senate including raising the debt ceiling and passing a budget.
