Trump Quietly Signed Executive Order Removing Protections For Women In The Workplace

The Executive Order removes two Obama-era protections meant to help women in the workplace.

Last week, Donald Trump quietly signed an Executive Order removing important workplace protections for women put in place by President Obama.

Trump’s order reverses President Obama’s 2014 Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order and is likely to hurt women in two ways. The Obama orders put in place paycheck transparency and did away with forced arbitration for sexual harassment, assault and discrimination cases.

But not to worry ladies, Donald Trump is in charge now and says we don’t need those pesky workplace protections.

By reversing President Obama’s Fair Pay order, Donald Trump makes it possible for businesses with federal contracts to continue forcing sexual harassment cases into secret arbitration proceedings meaning other employees and the public may never find out if there are major sex harassment problems at a company.

And when it comes to paycheck transparency the Trump order removes the mandate for large employers to detail earnings, salaries, pay scales and other important compensation details that help ensure that women and men are being compensated equally.

One example of the importance of paycheck transparency is Wal-Mart. According to data from a class action lawsuit against Wal-Mart, women in lower-paying hourly jobs were making $1,100 per year than men in the same jobs. And with higher-paid salary positions, women were being paid $14,500 less than male workers.
